Ben Fucht and his wife, Reeley, gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Shirley, on May 31, 1992. They were told by doctors that their daughter was born Deaf but that fact alone did not convince them, the parents, that something was seriously wrong with their child. Both Ben and Reeley were perfectly happy that their daughter was a healthy and joyful baby girl. Upon learning more about deafness, they decided to take the oral only route because, as the doctors stressed, it would provide a broader range of opportunities as opposed to the signing route. Through the first several months, the doctors and specialists, continued to direct Ben and Reeley to various materials distributed by the umbrella association known as the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf. Below is a brief explanation or time line of what happened to this family.
Case Scenario:
Daughter is discovered to be Deaf.
AGB immediately follows up with Mom and Dad.
Parents choose oral only route but decide against a cochlear implant.
Become members of the AGB association for the Deaf and hard of hearing.
Daughter gets fitted with hearing aids.
Daughter is 6 years old with limited vocabulary.
AGB suggest implantation since aids have provided little success.
Parents again decide against it.
Daughter continues speech and auditory training.
Daughter is 9 years old with a 5 year old's thinking.
Temper tantrums, screams and cries, frustration leads to rejecting her aids.
Parents decide to abandon oral only route and pursue learning American Sign Language.
AGB tries to convince parents that their daughter is a perfect candidate for a C.I.
Parents remain true to their desires and avoid the operating room.
American Sign Language becomes daughter's preferred language for instruction.
AGB abandons parents.
Hmmm...
By the age of ten years old, Shirley lacks a solid vocabulary, social skills, and shows signs of emotional and psychological stress in her behavior.
AGB's position on Mom and Dad's decision:
"If you do not do this (receive a CI), you are neglecting your child and denying them the opportunity to be a fully functional member of society. You will be restricting them to the Deaf world and not the world at large."
Yes folks, you read that right. Mom and Dad ended up being tripped up with guilt and as a result, stayed the course of the oral only route even when they had witnessed the little progress made with their daughter.
So what have we?
A young girl at ten years of age, who has been denied the opportunity to process information and to accumulate knowledge in the same timely manner as her age-mates.
You see, you have parents who have to start all over again, basically from scratch. They have to learn another approach as well as another language and this depresses them to the point that their motivation is completely shot. As a result they decided to send their daughter to the state school for the Deaf where she can acquire her new language, American Sign Language.
8 Years later, on May 28th 2010, Shirley graduates high school with honors and was voted by her class as the one most likely to succeed. She developed her trademark way of signing ASL and was considered by everyone to be one of the funniest story tellers. Today she is currently enrolled at Gallaudet University and is pursuing a BA in History. She hopes to one day inspire others to create history.
When asking her parents what they would have done differently, they replied:
"Learn sign from the beginning whether they (the child) have residual hearing or use an implant. This will ease the tensions between differences within familial issues and makes communication easier."
Fact: Parents who sign have more interaction with their Deaf adult children than those who do not.
Question: Who promotes this reality?

The JOKE is on you.
Ha! HA! Ha! HA!
I can spit on your ASL.
I can ignore your values.
I can call you an imbecile.
I can praise my abilities over your inabilities.
I can simply discriminate your ass because you can't hear and I can. You can't speak and I can. You don't wear an aide and I do. You don't have a CI and I do. I can understand hearing people and you can't. We're with the righteous and the proper. You're with stupid. Those monkey miming and ape gesturing people are simply pathetic. And that is okay. You know why?
DeafRead says it is okay to do so because they do not recognize the Deaf Community and the its values. It is okay to discriminate others because they don't speak or hear. It's okay to hold prejudices towards us and bunch us heathens in the same pen because we don't subscribe to the idea that speaking and hearing is necessary and that ASL is an obstruction to the goal of making every Deaf child fully functional by hearing standards.
Note: Hearing Standards
Yep,..it is all the rage,...because Deaf people really have no standards and values. Besides,...ASL isn't even a language. There is no such thing as a Deaf Heritage. What the hell are they thinking?
Fuck Deaf people and their cultural and linguistic values. This is a hearing world and we have the right to impose our values over these thoughtless imbeciles who believe they are so special.
C'mon,..let's talk about how much fun it is to be better than them and lets imagine how depressing and drastic our lives would be if we couldn't speak or hear and let us thank God we can belittle those who don't understand what the world wants for us.
Thank You DeafRead for allowing us to properly piss on the Deaf Community. The fact that you refuse to acknowledge a form of discrimination in which those who speak and hear can insult those who don't, you make it so easy for others to learn how to do the same.
Many Thanks!
Crazy Eight.

Hey AGBell, I want to go to college too!
"Mom!...Dad!...
I found a scholarship on the internet that will help us put me through college and it's sponsored by the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing."
Now, imagine the excitement Crystal and her parents felt when they discovered a specific scholarship that will help pay for college tuition and expenses for someone who is Deaf or hard of hearing. You see, the Clear family was barely getting by with Dad working as a janitor at the church across the street and Mom as a cashier at the local dollar store. Crystal had been worried since her junior year about finding a means to support herself through college. As an adept and studious pupil, she was determined to receive an education beyond high school. What a surprise it must have been for her to come across a scholarship that supports the Deaf and hard of hearing!
YET...
As they read the first criterion for eligibility to receive the scholarship, their excitement was immediately replaced with disappointment.
[Spoken communication must be the applicant's primary mode of communication.]
Crystal responded with grave concern, "But I am Deaf? Why is it so important that I must speak? I thought the AGBell Association was supportive of the Deaf and hard hearing."
She was very upset to find that such a scholarship was solely for those eligible, those who could speak and she found it rather perplexing to see them discriminate her on the basis that she was a signing Deaf person.
Hmmm...
Well I'll be....
I reckon it is CRYSTAL clear that the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and hard of hearing does not aim to support the signing Deaf population in pursuing a post secondary education.
But didn't they claim to include and support ASL among their membership?
Didn't they???
Please help me understand their reasons for only supporting Deaf and hard of hearing individuals who speak rather than sign?
Didn't they say they support the signing Deaf?
Didn't they???
Please show me why they do not want to support those who sign when they declare that those who don't are also members of the Deaf Community.
C'mon,..help a guy out, will ya?
Bonus Questions:
If "AG Bell does not believe that ASL should be prohibited or restricted as a choice, nor does AG Bell advocate against learning ASL as part of a child’s overall development if that is what the child’s parents desire", why are they discriminating parents of Deaf children who opted to raise their kids with ASL as their primary language?
AND
Would Gallaudet be considered a "mainstream" university?

Now excuse me while I go out to get some fresh air. Hypocrisy stinks!

A Question for MKM
If you don't like what the Deaf community has to say about the choices you make/made for your Deaf child, you can easily walk away and maintain a "normal" life for you and your child. I mean, heck, you don't have to keep posting your blogs on Deaf centric websites whose target audience is the Deaf community itself.
But, no, you choose to remain and in that you have chosen to be a target before a passionate community which is adamant about their cultural and linguistic identity. On this, I need not say more. Besides, isn't it your aim to immerse your child into a world where all options are made available and all opportunities can be had?
You can tout that you do provide all options and all opportunities for your child while you unconsciously hope that you may phase out the sign language and reach your ulterior aim to produce a successful and functional child who can communicate primarily through speaking and hearing.
My mama was afraid I'd forget to speak and lipread... uh-huh!
You say this is ridiculous and that is understandable on our part because...
...you simply don't understand.
Like I said,.. it is understandable...tsk...
You can praise all the modalities and technologies that are made available while overlooking the fact that such things are oppressive to the choices others have made. Choices that are simple and noninvasive on the child's being.
All of this brings me to the question:
Why do you continue to post on Deaf centric sites if you want your child to be a part of the "greater" hearing world and not the Deaf community?
I mean, sure, you want to share with others your experience and your familial journey in what you might call "deafness". The pathological term. I'm not saying you can't, just don't do it before the people who are perfectly happy with being a Deaf person rather than a hard of hearing, hearing impaired, or cochlear implanted individual.
If you want us to respect your choices, please respect ours. If you can't do that, then let me say this once and for all...get the fuck outta here and be sure to take your arrogant ignorance and propaganda with you.
Deaf people will continue to celebrate their heritage for as long hearing people continue to become deaf.
HA!
p.s. One could argue that DeafRead is not Deaf centric,...I know what it is but hey,..you tell me what you think...*wink*

Assholes Anonymous
I must be doing something right when a barrage of anonymous commentators decide to attack me and my blogposts that relate to Deaf children and their education. I mean, if I'm getting threats and statements that attempt hurt me, scare me, and belittle me, hell, I AM doing something right!
You see, when I first had my blog go through the DeafRead aggregate, I would allow anonymous comments to be posted because I respected people and their right to retain privacy while participating in Deaf related discussions. Alas, after years of studying the patterns of various IP addresses, I have come to know who these people are and how or why they react to the particular things I have expressed on MY blog.
Damn, I'm good!
Express I can.
Express I will.
With this, it is safe to say that you are never anonymous when you show up here on my blog. I know who you are and I've got you tagged and bagged, yet if you want such comments to be posted, I suggest you find some courage and use your real names. If not,... it just goes to show that you can't play with the big dogs because you pee like a puppy. You can't be a real person. Just a puppet who makes futile attempts to mindfuck yours truly.
Sorry folks, you can't intimidate me because I've sided with the children and the Truth. It sure is nice to know that my doing such truth saying intimidates you. It should! Otherwise I wouldn't get such hateful remarks from these no-name cowards. You're the ones who are paddling upstream (south) on Denial and you know what they say about things going South....
Tsk...I wonder why you're intimidated?
*whistling and twiddling thumbs as I look at the heavens above*
You want us to "move on" when you're the ones chaining Deaf children to an ideology that has failed many of us. Don't believe it now? Wait til puberty kicks in and the Truth comes out. Yep,...watch the days to come when your denial is challenged by their Truth.
Again,..Just YOU wait...
I know,..I got a Mama and a Papa and it hurts them to read the things I say because it is the Truth and they know it. Just like you will...
Signed,
Asshole Anonymous ;)
P.S. Summertime!
